The youth of today are saving the planet for tomorrow.

From a Swedish student educating the planet’s policymakers to schoolchildren striking across the globe, young people today are standing up in defence of the environment.

Look to Kudafushi, an island of the Maldives and you’ll find one more. Afaa, who goes by the online name of @The.IslandGirl, has inspired a generation of Maldivians to take action against the cooperate development which threatens their island. Her NGO BeLeaf works is run for and by youth. It has been pivotal in reducing the prevalence of single-use plastic and organising litter picks along the coast.

The environmental activist is prominent on social media, using Twitter and Instagram to foster debate. Her organisation of an island-wide Earth Hour  and vocal condemnation of airport expansion shows that the 22-year-old is not about to be silenced.

Meeting Afaa, the social influencer’s passion for her work was infectious and we are excited to work with UNICEF, to present her as a champion for a child’s right to a safe environment.

All children have the right to good quality health care – the best health care possible – and to safe drinking water, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment and information to help them stay healthy.
